This one is cool for ANYONE... mostly...
We need to do these things. Do I think they'll actually help humanity? You bet. Imagine if we all did this. Just all made sure to have sex on the same day. Or even if we just all hugged ourselves once a week. IF NOTHING ELSE, WE'LL ALL HAVE FUN, right?
I heard that Buddhist monks will every once in a while all sit down and spend many days in a row all concentrating on pleasant thoughts - happy thoughts. I know it sounds silly, but it works in some way shape or form. Like great weather hit Tibet or wherever and nothing terribly bad happened on the planet for a while. Obivously, they're not doing very much of this meditation these days. Maybe we should help.
Princeton set up these random number generating programs in various computers all over the world. They send their random numbers back to Princeton where they are recorded based on the source. The numbers are then analyzed to see if there are any patterns. Normally, on an average day, there is simply noise - random numbers generating a pattern of randomness (if that makes any sense). What the researchers at Princeton do is watch this pattern of randomness for any deviations from the randomness. In other words, they watch to see if the numbers become less random - if the numbers become more uniform - in other, other words, if the rate of randomness goes down. Put even more simply, they watch to see if the probability of the various random number generators around the world choosing the same numbers goes up.
Sounds far fetched that they'd find anything? Not so - in the hours following the horrible events on 9-11-2001, the pattern deviated noticably - the numbers became less random. It was as though the world was reacting as a single consciousness. If you've ever read Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy you will understand perfectly this explanation: the probability field of the planet Earth changed. For those few hours and the days after, random probabilty went down apparently because we were all thinking in the same direction.
I wonder what would happen to the probability field if we all had good thoughts at the same time... let's give this a try. If you've got a web site, be sure to post these links somewhere on it. A happier planet starts with each individual. So, don't worry - be happy DAMMIT!!
