I don't know if there's such a thing as "too soon" when it comes to something like this, but writing this post yesterday would have been too soon since he hadn't passed away yet!
He'd definitely have laughed at that joke. :)
When he was diagnosed with cancer back in (I think it was) 2007, doctors gave him anywhere from months to a couple years to live. I took one look at him and knew the doctors were just wrong.
I thought he would live forever. I mean, rationally, I knew he wouldn't, but his spirit was just one of those indomitable spirits that seemed somewhat invincible. But cancer takes that away from a great many of us.
Don taught me how to be a stickler for the facts, how to work hard, how to do what needed doing and, most of all, how to take myself too seriously.
When I told him that, and thanked him for it, three years ago, he immediately apologized. I told him that it was fine--that I preferred taking myself too seriously over not taking myself seriously enough or at all. He seemed to understand and agree that it was better.
You know, so many people think about going to heaven or are obsessed with living forever, but, in the end, we do live forever through our actions and the memories we leave people with. Don had a tremendous, influence on me and will, for better or worse, continue to have a tremendous influence on me until the day I pass away. Until that day comes, I will be taking myself too seriously, will constantly look up facts and correct people when they are wrong. So, if I happen to do that to you, don't blame me. ;)
Take care, Don! You are in a better place now and we will miss you always and will be glad your suffering is over. I will strive to remember the best you, the healthier you, the person who was always and will always be invincible.
Oh and, for anyone reading this, please don't smoke. Just, don't. Seriously--don't. If you already are, just stop. Now.
