High School Girl Makes Massive Cancer Tech Breakthrough while Media Focuses on Santorum (literally and figuratively)

High School Girl Makes Massive Cancer Tech Breakthrough while Media Focuses on Santorum (literally and figuratively) by thepetecom

I spotted this story on Engadget back in December (original here: www.engadget.com/2011/12/08/high-school-senior-kills-canc... ) but have intentionally been sitting on it to see if the mainstream news would run with the story or just continue covering the same old Santorum (I'm not just referring to the Republican). Typically, this amazing breakthrough ("the Swiss Army Knife" of cancer treatments) has not become a major story in the news. Cancer kills more people in the US than terrorism kills around the world. I lost a college friend and a grand father to it, I know three people fighting it now, the current statistics say that one-in-three adults in the western world will get cancer. Yet the USG spends hundreds of billions (even trillions) of dollars fighting terrorism while cancer gets infinitely less and the press does nothing but exploit this focus on war and ignores the more realistic threats to American life (along with it's hopefully treatments). Why are America's priorities so screwed up?

It's the New Game Show: Will Your Cell Phone Give you Cancer OR NOT!?!?

ARG! As if technology doesn’t give us enough troubles as it is, here comes a post from Gizmodo called “New Studies, Cellphone Manufacturer Legalese Revive Brain Cancer Debate“  here are a couple cuttings:
The latest troubling study, and companies’ own cellphone instruction manuals, says they might. Again.

Randall Stross, writing for the New York Times reports on the latest “do they or don’t they?” findings:
But the legal departments of cellphone manufacturers slip a warning about holding the phone against your head or body into the fine print of the little slip that you toss aside when unpacking your phone. Apple, for example, doesn’t want iPhones to come closer than 5/8 of an inch; Research In Motion, BlackBerry’s manufacturer, is still more cautious: keep a distance of about an inch.

Continuing on, Stross writes that the manufacturer’s consumer guidelines were brought to his attention by Devra Davis, an epidemiologist and author of “Disconnect,” a book on cellphone radiation. Overall, the average number of brain-related cancer cases has not increased since the introduction of cellphones to society. That said, there’s a caveat: brain cancer in the 20-to-29 age group has actually increased in that period, while dropping in the older population. Confusing!

I’ll say! Then there’s this:
Furthermore, Henry Lai, a researcher with the University of Washington, currently maintains a database of 400 papers related to radiofrequency radiation and damaged brain DNA. What has he found in all that data?
He found that 28% of studies with cellphone industry funding showed some sort of effect, while 67% of studies without such funding did so. “That’s not trivial,” he said.

GAH!!!

Personally, I use my cell phone for surfing, email, GPSing and other functions MUCH more than I use it for actually talking.  Does this mean I’ll get hand-cancer?

What’s even more fun is the crazy inconsistency between studies funded by cell phone companies and studies NOT funded by cell phone companies. It’s just a big mess.

people with cancer aren’t bullied into committing suicide lame-o

Nah, they just wait around to die because no one cares enough to find a cure.

I mean, SERIOUSLY, how many people die of being bullied because they’re gay?  Now how many people die of cancer? Hm… I’m thinking Tumblr and pals can go pink for a bit if that would really help.

More evidence capitalism/the free market is not the way to run the world

The Friday Podcast: Death Saves You Money : NPR from July 16, 2010.  I listened to this the other day and my heart sank to hear it. Yes, humans were willing to point out that “If people die, it costs the government less.”

And some people think corporations aren’t immoral psychopaths.

Here are more details from NPR.org:

A decade ago, Philip Morris commissioned a study that found smokers in the Czech Republic were actually saving society money.

A big part of the savings: Smoking tends to kill people while they’re still young, saving society the long-term costs of caring for them as they get older.

Hit up that npr.org link to listen to the entire Planet Money podcast (which sometimes comes across a bit on the amoral side, in my mind, but is still worth listening to) and learn about how the study bit Philip Morris on the ass.

Episode 8 of the 666cast featuring a rant against our leaders, both elected and paid for! Yep, in this week’s 666cast, I take to task the folks who are leading us. Whether elected or not, they have a responsibility to do the right thing to keep society and the people who live in it safe and moving forward. However, none of the guys at the top are doing it. Whether it’s Obama or the bankers or the head of BP, we’re getting screwed big time and our society is in trouble because of it. Please subscribe to the feed. What do you think?

Hucklebug.com Fighting Cancer this Weekend but Needs Your Help!

My good friends Bet & Stennie over at Hucklebug.com are taking part in Blogathon 2009. They'll be podcasting their show The Hucklebug all day long this Saturday. HOWEVER, they need pledges, so please, please, please, stop by HuckleBug.com and pledge a buck or two today and help them make their 24-hour Hucklebug-a-thon a BIG success.

Or, at the very least, stop by their site, give their show a listen and get addicted like I did well over 150 weeks ago (yes, they've been going for quite a while). Bet & Stennie's Hucklebug is like sitting around listening to your two best friends talk about everything from movies, to news, to whatever. Leave a comment, they give you a shoutout. Too cool.

Tune in Saturday July 25, 2009 starting at 9am Eastern Time for new mini-episodes of the Hucklebug ALL DAY and hear not only Bet & Stennie, but also listen as folks call in. I'll be calling in and so will Jay ThePal and many others!! So, this Saturday, PEOPLE OF EARTH: LISTEN TO THE HUCKLEBUG @ HUCKLEBUG.COM!

You Really Have to See This: Comparing Bailout Funds to GovernmentSpending Over the Years

Click here to see the full-size graph.

Here's another reason Republicans should shut their fracking GOBS about how the Democrats are wasting spending our tax dollars.  Check out that chart.

Can you believe that shit?

Look at the absurd difference between how much the moonshot ran us, compared to the Bailout.
$237 billion vs. $4,616 billion.

Dude, our leaders are unbelievable fools.

Just to add to that chart, I did a quick bit of Googling and found the Cancer.gov's numbers on how much was spent by our government on cancer research in 2007: $1367.1 million--not even a billion-and-a-half dollars were spent on cancer research.

So, if my math is right, to save our banks the outlay was 3,000 times the amount spent on cancer research in 2007. (That's 4,616,500,000,000 ÷ 1,367,100,000 = 3376.85612, according to my Mac's calculator widget--actually, I had to lop off the bottom six zeroes because it couldn't handle anything with so many zeroes.)

So, this is our lovely government. Charged with keeping us safe, yet more willing to keep bad banks afloat than to keep our lives, uh, alive.

Incidentally, according to Cancer.org, in 2007, Cancer killed just short of 1.5 million Americans (1,444,920 is the exact number, FYI.) The current estimated population of America is just short of 306 million people. That means that around 1 in 300 people die of cancer in a year. How many people die of bad banking?

Special thanks to my good friend Katabasis at http://i-squared.blogspot.com for pointing me at a VoltageCreative.com blog post written by Wade who made up the chart above based on numbers from a post by Cory Doctorow at BoingBoing.net.

10 Points

Here are 10 points to start off your new year on the right, er, center foot.

1) More than 2000 American soldiers have died during the US invasion and occupation of Iraq. Tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) more have been both mentally and physically wounded. Tens of thousands (over one hundred thousand?) of Iraqis have died during the invasion/occupation with countless more mentally and/or physically injured.

2) On 911 3000 Americans died with hundreds of thousands more mentally and/or physically injured.

3) No less than 37,000 people have died in car accidents every year since 1995 (source: http://www-fars.nhtsa.dot.gov/) in America, alone.

4) Lung cancer killed 157,630 Americans in 2002, the most recent year statistics are available. (source: http://www.cdc.gov/lungcancer/statistics/index.htm)

5) Worldwide, roughly 3 million humans died in 2005 thanks to AIDS. (source: http://www.avert.org/worldstats.htm)

6) While statistics vary wildly depending on who you talk to (+-thousands), the highest estimates have the human race losing, on average, 3,227 lives a year for the past five years to terrorism, worldwide. (according to RAND/MIPT numbers, 2001 and 2004 saw more than 4000 deaths for obvious reasons - 911 and Iraq) (source: http://www.johnstonsarchive.net/terrorism/intlterror.html)

7) According to the UN Ambassador from Sri Lanka, Prasad Kariyawasam, it will take $2.1 billion to give 150,000 Sri Lankans their homes back, post-tsunami. $500 million has been dispersed of the required money in the first year after the tsunami hit. (source: http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/12/28/1457235)

8) At the start of 2006 the war in Iraq has cost Americans in excess of $230 billion. (source: http://nationalpriorities.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=182)

9) In 2004 projections estimated that the 2004 presidential election would cost more than $1 billion--this includes not only administration of the election itself, but also the advertising and general expenses of the candidates. (source: http://www.opensecrets.org/pressreleases/2004/04spending.asp)

10) You are more likely to die of AIDS, lung cancer, or in a car accident than you are in a terrorist bomb. Instead of spending hundreds of billions of dollars on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the US Government could have paid for the complete reconstruction of Sri Lanka several times over ($2.1 billion), bribed Saddam Hussein into stepping down ($50 million? $100 million?), AND STILL had tens of billions of dollars left over to sink into a cure for AIDS, cancer and ways to make our roads and cars safer.

Why are you afraid of terrorists when cars are ten times more likely to kill you?

Hell, AIDS is a thousand times more likely to kill you...
