One of my passions, when I have time to embrace it, is custom toy design. I've been into toys since I was a little kid and still have quite a few as I approach middle-age. There's something about the innocence of toys that inspires my imagination to extreme levels.
Well, there's a growing movement of artists who work in the medium of toys. Companies like Kid Robot put out white vinyl toys that you buy and then paint yourself. I have done a few of these, but I'm just an amateur. The guy who did the piece above, who calls himself "Doktor A," is clearly a freakin' master.

This style of design is part of the growing subculture of steampunk. It is going to be the new Goth. THere is a Victorian/Steam convention in New Jersey called Salon Con www.saloncon.com that I went to this past september. There is also an Edwardian/Victorian/Steam monthly event night here in NYC called Dnaces of Vice http://www.dancesofvice.com/ .

I wanted to get into the Steampunk thing but realized I am doing too many things right now. No time for Genre stuff. Only in my spare time. I do have a coat with tails and bowler hats. All got on the cheap and in second hand stores mind you,

Oh yeah, man--I'm totally familiar with the subculture of Steampunk. If I weren't into hacking and custom toys as hobbies, I'd be aiming at that. However, it's real easy to burn yourself if you go hardcore with Steampunk. That water vapor is HOT! ;)
