An unnamed source familiar with a virus that’s infected America’s Predator and Reaper drones tells Wired it’s ”logging pilots’ every keystroke as they remotely fly missions over Afghanistan and other warzones.” Sweet Jesus. (via newsweek)
This is actually awesome news. This shows that someone with some knowledge about hacking can hack into the US military’s drone systems and keep track of every move the drone pilot makes. How long, do you think it will take before hackers can take control of the drone?
Why is this a good thing? Because we need some humble pie served to us. We need a power greater than the US Mil or the USG to be a check and balance to America’s insane power in the world. We also need a reminder that technology is the last basket you want all of your eggs in. It’s not secure, not 100% reliable and is trusted way too much in the world today with everything from medical records, to the economy to who knows what else.
If hackers can learn to control the drones, then we’ll see some serious fear in the USG.
I’m wondering why hackers have yet to go after the Federal Reserve. They put their systems on the Internet years ago, as I recall.
Wouldn’t it be neat if the government, the Fed and the Mil all figure out that tech isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be? This is what scares me about so much of the world today—waaaay too much trust in shit that always breaks—technology.
Technology is great, except when it isn’t and then it can be pretty bad.
