| Jesus... I don't know if you've been following the news from Russia, but the siege on that school has "ended". As I type this I'm watching the BBCNews Real Media stream as Russian troops are digging around the school trying to catch and subdue all of the terrorists. I would be watching CNN or MSNBC, but they're not talking about this story. I even checked Fox News and instead of running footage of this heart-wrenching event, they were running highlights of Bush's speech at the RNC. Good call, morons. In case you only get your news from the mainstream broadcast networks, you may be completely in the dark about this story. Read more about it here. In a nutshell, on Wednesday of this week (9/1/4) terrorists claiming to be Chechens invaded a school of between 700 and 1500 kids and lined the kids up against the windows, wired the place with trip-wires and threatened to blow the place up if anyone tried to invade to get them out. They said that for every one of their people wounded, they'd kill 25 kids. For every member of their team killed, they would kill 50 kids. They were doing this because they want Russia out of Chechnya and they want Chechen freedom from Russia. What kind of a world do we live in where taking hundreds of children hostage is a way to manipulate a government's foreign policy? How is it possible that a goverment in today's world could be so abusive and out of touch with what people under it's governance feel? Terror is rising around the world because people feel out of control, like they don't have a voice. Terror will grow as a way to change things as governments around the world continue to not give a voice to all of its people. This is something every government needs to think about. By the way, as of 5am PST, it's being reported that 250 people in the school have been wounded and rushed to the hospital. 180 of them are children. UPDATE 5:11am: I just heard a Russian BBC producer explain that apparently, the terrorists didn't allow the children to eat or drink over the past two days. Only their own urine was allowed to be consumed by the hostages at one point. UPDATE 1:56pm:Well, BBC News is now reporting that in excess of 200 people have been killed, including a large number of kids. It also seems that all but roughly four of the terrorist/rebels/hostage takers (whatever they're supposed to be called) have been killed or arrested. According to BBC News, some of them were Arabs. UPDATE 8/4/4 12:36pm:Well, the body count is now at 320 and counting. 155 of those are kids. Seems it was the first day of school and in Russia the tradition is for at least some of the parents to stay with their kids for the entire day. So, at least the dead aren't all kids. |
