The human brain may still be evolving. So suggests new research that tracked changes in two genes thought to help regulate brain growth, changes that appeared well after the rise of modern humans 200,000 years ago.Are we a bunch of pompous asses or what? Yes, we're so cool that we can't possibly get any better?
That the defining feature of humans - our large brains - continued to evolve as recently as 5,800 years ago, and may be doing so today, promises to surprise the average person, if not biologists.
"We, including scientists, have considered ourselves as sort of the pinnacle of evolution," noted lead researcher Bruce Lahn, a University of Chicago geneticist whose studies appear in Friday's edition of the journal Science.
"There's a sense we as humans have kind of peaked," agreed Greg Wray, director of Duke University's Center for Evolutionary Genomics.
You're fucking kidding me.
With all of the things that are so very effed up these days there are actually scientists retarded enough to think we're at the pinnacle of human evolution????
All I can say is that we'd better still be evolving or else God is one dumb fucker. I mean, come ON, THIS is the best evolution/God can do?
All right, where's the alien ship? I want off this damn planet.
What? Aliens are less believable than God?
ANYway, it's obvious to this humble blogger that we, as a species, have a helluva long way to go before we peak. (Heh! [http://news.google.com/news?q=peak%20oil&hl=en&hs=VV3&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&sa=N&tab=wn|Oil's way ahead of us there!]) Just take the recent ridiculocity regarding that bitch Katrina. According to [http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/09/national/nationalspecial/09military.html?ei=5090&en=aa642b8c89c27c01&ex=1283918400&adxnnl=1&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&adxnnlx=1126238795-dGCl9WlaN8lbkCHBy9hw2w&pagewanted=print|an article] at NYT the reason those fools at FEMA and the White House didn't step in sooner was because they figured the Louisianna governor could save things with the National Guard troops she had under her command. Ha, that's funny because a butt-load of them were still in Iraq. According to [http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-5266970,00.html|an article] from Guardian.co.uk a bunch of have come back, so that's good. However, that's not the only problem with what went on--see, FEMA's original plan for dealing with a disaster like Katrina was to rely heavily (and apparently solely) on local law enforcement, fire and medical folks to take care of things. Yep, you guessed it, the USG didn't bother with a plan "B"--a backup plan in case their first plan didn't work for whatever reason. There's that pomposity there again.
So, yeah, we're not done evolving yet--for sure.
Oh and if that's not dumb enough for you, [http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/news/nation/12617684.htm|here's an article] from WaPo available over at DFW.com that reports on the fact that:
Scores of Mississippi National Guard troops in Iraq who lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina have been refused even 15-day leaves to aid their displaced families, told by commanders that there were too few U.S. troops in Iraq to spare them, according to members of the Mississippi Guard.
According to the article the number of troops is 600--soooo, we can't spare 600 guys to come home and take care of their families because there just aren't enough troops in Iraq??
Ohhh, there's got to be a draft...
Back on topic, here's another smart move from the folks that brought you TWAT (The War Against Terror): War without Enough Troops!
Hey, the acronym for that would be WET--too cool! So, that makes the USG all WET!
HA!
Damn, I'm clever.
Yes, I know the acronym would really be WwoET, but what the hell kinda joke can you tell with those letters?
I think I need to do some evolving myself...
