HOUSE VOTES ON THE (new) DRAFT

Check it out, as I type this, assuming C-SPAN is telling me the truth when they post that little "LIVE" graphic in the corner, the House is voting on whether to re-institute the draft. :) See, there were these "Internet rumors" going around the 'net that the USGov was talking about reinstating the draft. The bill was brought to the floor for a vote today by the Republicans because they wanted to quell these rumors. As they accurately point out, only the Dems have put forward any bills on bringing back the draft. The Dems say, essentially, that the physics are all wrong to think we can finish the job in Iraq without the draft. The Repubs don't want the draft to become a campaign issue, so they want to put this rumor to bed in the hopes that young voters (the kind that are on the 'net ;) ) won't use it as a reason to vote Democrat in November. This is a pretty funny thing, seeing as the Repubs must think those of us on the 'net are idiots and can't do a bit of research to discover who really is sponsoring the legislation to bring back the draft. It's the Dems.

But who's war is it?

It's George W. Bush's war.

The fact of the matter is that Bush can't seem to build an actual coallition in Iraq or Afghanistan (really). In fact, you may recall Poland has announced they're pulling their troops out days after Bush praised them at the first prez debate back on September 30, 2004.

This means a draft is going to be almost definitely necessary sooner, than later. Now, if Kerry gets elected, it's possible he may be able to convince other countries to come help the USMil. However, if he can't, the draft will need to be reinstated if we expect to clean up the mess in Iraq the USGov has made. It's also possible Kerry will be able to get some, but not all the troops we need from other countries. This might postpone the draft, but it would still be required down the road, especially if the violence continues at it's given rate.

It's here that I'd like to remind everyone just who started this war:

George W. Bush.

You want to keep this guy around for another four years as a reward for getting us into a position where we all but have to reinstate the draft?

Well, it won't happen today--the vote totals are being displayed on C-SPAN right now--it's 402-to-2 against the draft. Big surprise--but will these numbers change on November 3rd?
